Gingerbread is easily one of my holiday flavours. There’s nothing like a fresh gingerbread cookie straight out of the oven, all soft and spiced. I don’t even like the decorated kind with icing and candy. I prefer to enjoy the warm and wonderful flavour of molasses without all the other sugariness packed on.
Speaking of sugar, the holidays tend to get pretty saturated with sweets and other not-so-good foods. So why not get those favourite flavours in a healthier way? I’ve packed all those delicious spices, and the perfect hint of molasses into a healthy smoothie so I can enjoy the nostalgia of gingerbread, while getting a healthy breakfast or snack at the same time.
Prep time: 10 minutes
- 1 cup milk of choice (I used almond)
- 1/2 cup applesauce
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1 banana, frozen
- 1 tsp fresh ginger, minced
- 1 tbsp molasses
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp gingerbread spice (mix of cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, allspice)
- Place all ingredients in blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy plain or garnish with cinnamon and gingerbread crumbles.
